Como’s Bishop’s Palace was built by order of Bishop Alberico in the 11th Century, when he declared Santa Maria Maggiore as the new Cathedral of Sant’Abbondio. The palace once had a baptistery. In 1931 it underwent restorations, under the direction of the architect Federico Frigerio, which revealed remains of the original building. There is a Gothic loggia to the right of the courtyard, a grand staircase, and the apse of an ancient church, now an oratory dedicated to St. Michael by Bishop Boniface of Modena.
