Baveno, on Lake Maggiore, is an ancient town with relics found from the 1st Century of Roman occupation. It nestles below a mountain of pink granite, from which the town benefited in quarrying. The town also has a proud history in its struggle for Italian freedom from the Austrians and later the Fascists. Today it is an elegant resort and has fine villas close to the fabulous flower gardened lakeside. There is much to see in this town, such as the Villa Branca, Casa Morandi the church of San Gervaso and San Protaso.
