The Basilica di San Leucio was constructed on a former Hellenistic temple. Parts of the previous building was used including the podium, the blocks of the cell walls and some columns. Bishop Sabino built the second stage the building and added bright mosaics on each side (geometrical patterns and symbols of heaven). During the 7th and the 8th centuries four pillars transformed the layout into a cross-plan; the basilica was then dedicated to Saint Leucio. In the 9th Century a chapel was built with an apse, and tuff sarcophagi and graves have been found inside it and nearby.
