Coming into Arona you cannot fail to miss the Rocca, a natural fortress making an impressive backdrop to the harbour. It is topped by the ruins of the Borromeo family castle, whose history is tied quite closely to the development of the town. The Borromeo family were lords and rulers of Arona from the 15th Century having succeeded the Viscontis. While in town take the time to visit the Civic Museum in the Palazzo de Filippi which holds a collection on the town’s history and the mineralogy of the local area.
