The Arch of Augustus is located on the eastern edges of the town of Aosta. It’s sited near the old Roman bridge that crosses the Buthier River. The triumphal arch is a commanding structure built in 25 BC to commemorate the victory of the Roman troops of Consul Terence Varrone over the local Salassi tribe. It has a single opening and is constructed from local stone. It stands 11.5 metres high and 8.89 metres wide and is decorated with Corinthian columns. The original statues and decorations have been lost but a wooden crucifix was added in the 16th Century.
