Angera has a long and distinguished history; under the Romans it was a military town as well as a commercial town and busy port. It was so important strategically that the Rocca led the Lombards to make it the centre of their Verbano Province. Because of its importance the town was the centre of many battles for supremacy by the Franks, the Torrianis, the Viscontis and finally the Borromeo family. The town is dominated by Angera Castle in which today the descendants of the Borromeo family still live.
